I’m happy to present my review of the IK Multimedia iRig Keys I/O 49 which is specifically designed to be used with iOS devices. Though this is the case, it is also compatible with both Mac and PC laptops with USB connections. In terms of software, this midi controller is compatible with just about every DAW however, it has been created to integrate seamlessly with both GarageBand and Logic Pro applications.
Straight away, the coolest thing about this midi controller that sets it apart from ALL other midi controllers is that it comes with a built in Audio Interface! Yes, that’s right folks, now you can record 96kHz audio in 24 bit without the use of a dedicated audio interface. The input supports both quarter inch and XLR connections and has V48 phantom power for condenser microphones all while being USB bus powered! That’s truly incredible. Batteries are required however when being used in conjunction with iOS devices but that’s hardly anything to complain about.
The iRig Keys I/O sports a sleek and elegant design in black with white trim. It is also available in both 25 key and 49 key sizes. In addition to the sturdy velocity sensitive keys, both models also come equipped with velocity sensitive pads depending on your programming preference. The pads and other indicators glows a soft blue which looks great and adds a special atmosphere in dark studio rooms.
In terms of size, both models are the absolute smallest length possible, sporting full size piano keys while still being extremely compact. This is excellent for travel and portability. Both models weigh less than 5 pounds. There are also transport controls which help keep the focus on the keyboard, not needing to shift back and forth between the connected device.
There are 4 assignable knobs that can be easily programmed to manipulate midi data on virtually any VST with a midi learn function. This is especially handy when wanting to create natural sounding automation in real time.
In addition to all this incredible hardware options, the iRig Keys I/O comes fully equipped with over $500 of professional IK Multimedia Software including Sample Tank 3, Miroslav Philharmonik 2, Syntronik Pro-V, T-RackS 4 Delux and Ableton Live 10 Lite! Combined with the hardware makes this a pretty incredible bundle you do not want to pass up.
On a personal note, I really am enjoying this midi controller for its sleek design, compact size and overall simplicity. It allows me to do exactly what I need and has a good balance of pads, knobs and faders that are arranged in a way that is easy to understand right away. The built in audio interface is a huge bonus that puts this midi controller truly in a league of its own. I recommend the iRig Keys I/O to anyone in the market as a solid option that will serve them well for many years to come.
